2011 Summer Conference

GSPHE held a summer conference on the weekend of July 22 at Georgia State University in Atlanta.
Below is an outline of the discussions, workshops, and presentations on the education crisis.

PANEL DISCUSSION: “Student Action Against the Privatized University”
Panelists: Students and Workers in Solidarity, Progressive Student Alliance, Georgia Undocumented Youth Alliance, Georgia Students for Public Higher Education

WORKSHOP: “WE ARE NOT THE CRISIS: The Economic ‘Crisis’ and the Fight Back Against Austerity”
A discussion on the origins of the current economic crisis, the ensuing wave of austerity measures, and the student fight back in Georgia. 

1:45 PM-2:45 PM
WORKSHOP: “LIFT THE BAN: The Effects of Anti-Immigrant Policy and Legislation on Public Education”
Presenter: American Civil Liberties Union of Georgia
A discussion on how national and state anti-immigration legislation, written by private corporations, impacts undocumented youth and our education systems. 

3:00 PM – 4:30 PM
WORKSHOP 3A “HOPE IS OUR ONLY HOPE: Organizing in Response to HOPE Scholarship Cuts”
A discussion on the nature of the HOPE scholarship cuts, and a skill-sharing session on how to organize your campus.

WORKSHOP 3B “CREATIVE TACTICS AND ESCALATION: Organizational Values and Moving Forward”
How GSPHE can improve itself as a statewide coalition, and projections for Fall 2011
What obstacles have we hit? How have our actions evolved?

“THE GLOBAL STUDENT MOVEMENT: The International Fight Back”
Students from the international and national community discussing their organizing work and the movement at large.

 “NEXT STEPS: How to Approach the Fall 2011”
This discussion will articulate statewide demands to guide GSPHE actions for the 2011 – 2012 school year and what our fall semester day of action will be.

  1. money is irresponsibly dealt with in the state. greed and stupidity take funds that are needed and deserved by hard working students, and pisses it away. One simple example is that the GA lottery is run on a cash basis. that meaning, you cant use your debit card to purchase tickets. if they changed that alone, to resemble say…the florida lottery which takes cash and card, they could bring in another huge base of funding. But, they prefer not to because that would require change and thats too difficult….
